The 1 : 5 Million International Geological Map of Europe and Adjacent Areas (IGME 5000) shows the pre-Quarternary geology of the entire Europe onshore and – first time at this scale – offshore.
In addition to the age and lithology of the geological units, also faults and structures, magnetic anomalies, the continental shelf and slope, the mid ocean ridge axis, metamorphic features, ophiolites and other geological features are shown.

The map was developed as a GIS under the leadership of BGR and the auspices of the Commission of the Geological Map of the World (CGMW) in cooperation with Geological Surveys of 48 countries and more than 20 scientific institutes. The printed map was published in 2005.

For detailed information about the „IGME 5000: More than just a map - A multinational GIS project“ please go to IGME-Website.

In the BGR Produktcenter you will find additional information. Here you can download the GIS data and image files (without costs) and find advise for the purchase of the printed map. The IGME 5000 map is also sold in a reduced format at the scale 1:10 Million by the Commission for the Geological Map of the World.

In parallel the map is available as web map service at the BGR Geoviewer in both the original version and transformed according to the INSPIRE data specifications. Information on accessing the WMS service you find here.
